oliver goes to the dog park!

he’s incredibly well-mannered with other dogs, and adores the toy-laden festivities:

we introduced the brilliant little chap to lots of new things today. he’s wonderful off the leash; he adores nature; and, he learned that water is deep & wet! needless to say, i needed to rescue him!

oliver’s new toys…

he’s already accumulated a fair arsenal (thanks to amazon). these include: a bear, a dolly, a stuffed tree stump with three squeaky squirrels, and a tub full of various treats ;)

we’re foster parents!

That’s right. Oliver’s his name. He’s a 2 year old “cock-a-poo”. We think.

So, I’m on Ortho this month and occasionally get bored when there’s not much to do. This is the case on Wednesday. We had been talking about dogs and cats for a long time and about being too busy blah…blah…blah. But, I thought, what about a rescue dog? Already trained, chilled out, and pretty self-sufficient. So I did a little search in the area of recently rescued pups. One place in particular is Furry Friends Rescue. They pick up pups from local shelters and place them in doggie daycare until they are fostered (a couple days to a week). Once they’re fostered they get adoptedĀ  and the magic continues…

Which leads me to Oliver’s story. He was abandoned in a nearby field and picked up by local authorities. As he was a pretty endearing guy he got rescued very quickly by Furry Friends and placed in a great daycare program. He’d only been there 2 days when I happened upon him in my search. His ‘before’ picture showed a happy dude with some serious dreadlocks. I could tell he was our kinda guy. I got in touch with FFR, signed up to be a foster pop, and took him home today.

Turns out he’s pretty darn amazing. He’s totally cool on his own but hungry for attention. He’s a total people pleaser and amazing with other dogs. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll have to keep him around…

la’s phenomenal tri

we just got home from pleasanton, where la decimated the local multi-sport competition. it was her first official tri, but she managed an incredible 6th place (female) in a field of 1000+! here’s a quick preview of the day…

horribly tired…super sleepy…but…PICTURE TIME

hey, all:

i’m ultra-sorry about the tardiness of this post. as you probably know, laura and i spent last weekend in yosemite with our co-interns. they’re an amazing group, and we compiled some sweet photos. it’s time, therefore, to upload! (work’s been nasty – thus the delay):

vlc 1.0 is out

as most of you probably know, VideoLAN (aka ‘vlc’) is the greatest media app available. it’s free, open-source, and available for almost any platform conceivable. i’ve enjoyed it for years, but today is the official launch of version 1.0.

get it here!

installing os x 10.5.7 on eee pc 1000he

below is a draft of a post that i recently composed about my new asus. it’s now up and running, gorgeously! as i quickly became carried away in the terminal-heavy processes, i never finished the piece. nonetheless, here’s a taste ;)

hey all…this is another one of those fairly boring technical posts. unless, of course, you’re trying to do the task that i describe. then you’d find it rather stimulating (and enormously time saving).

this time, i’m chronicling my experience tweaking the new asus eee pc 1000he to handle the freshest retail version of os x. you may recall that i previously wrote about my efforts involving the 1000ha, which went perfectly! well, i gifted that system to my father, and the simplest replacement involved a slight model change from the ha to the he. there’s not much of a difference between the hardware. here are the brief pros and cons:

good – the he has integrated bluetooth, an upgraded battery, a different ‘clickier’ keyboard, and a newer stock wifi card that supports 802.11 n.

bad – the stock wifi still doesn’t work with any os x drivers/kernels, and the system isn’t available in white :(

again, my real intention in writing this is simply to create an outline for my own future machinations. i’ve realized that even a cursory description saves lots of subsequent work.
